AST now employs
38 people at its state-of-the-art facility in Coventry
and recently opened its first international plant
to bring much needed zinc alloy electroplating technology
to South Africa.
The company has channelled more than £800,000
into equipping the Johannesburg site with the latest
computerised lines and has recruited 30 people to
man its operations.
Dave Stevens, Managing Director, provides the international
perspective: "We were approached by a number
of first tier suppliers to look at the situation
in South Africa and to see whether we could bring
our expertise in high-technology zinc alloy electroplating
to the marketplace."
He continues: "After research into the marketplace
we were in no doubt as to the buoyancy of the industry
and our ability to remove a potentially threatening
bottleneck. It was just a case of working out the
best plan of action to exploit the situation."
Backed by the DTI, AST has launched a subsidiary
called 'SA ASTEC' and will be opened the new factory
in January 2005, with an anticipated turnover reaching
£1m in the first year.
